CELTA vs TEFL: Which One Is Better for Teaching English Abroad?

If you’re thinking about teaching English abroad, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is:

Should I do a CELTA or a TEFL?

I’ve been there myself, and I know how confusing it can be trying to figure out which one is actually worth it.

It’s also assessed and moderated by Cambridge English, which is why it tends to carry more weight with employers.

The biggest difference is the level of training and how seriously it’s taken by employers.

CELTA includes:

• real teaching practice with students
• feedback from qualified trainers
• a more structured approach

Whereas many TEFL courses:

• are more theoretical
• may not include real classroom experience

This doesn’t mean TEFL isn’t useful it just means CELTA is often seen as more “professional”.

If your goal is to teach in Italy, especially in cities like Turin, having a CELTA can definitely give you an advantage.

Many language schools prefer CELTA because:

• they know what level you’ve been trained to
• it includes practical teaching experience

That being said, it is still possible to find work with a TEFL especially if you:

• already have a degree
• have some teaching experience
• are flexible with the type of work

This is where a lot of people make their decision.

CELTA:

• a bigger upfront investment

So you need to ask yourself:
