If you’re new here, my name is Rebeah, and I create content about Italy, living in Italy, expat life, and my journey. I’m originally from the UK, and I’ve been living in Italy for over four years now.
In this post, I’m sharing something that I wish I had when I first moved.
A real checklist of things to do before moving to Italy
Not everything will apply to you, but take what you need and use it.

Following a clear moving to Italy checklist will help you avoid stress, save money, and settle into your new life much faster.
1. Start Packing, Decluttering & Storage Early
Don’t leave this to the last minute.
Start thinking about:
- What you actually need
- What you can sell
- What you can store
I made the mistake of bringing WAY too much when I first moved to Sicily.
When I moved to Turin?
One suitcase. Way better.
2. Inform Your Bank
This is so important.
If you don’t tell your bank you’re moving:
They might block your card
And trust me… you do NOT want that happening in another country.
3. Sort Out Your Healthcare Before You Leave
Before moving, go and:
- Visit your doctor
- Get full health checks
- Dentist, eyes, everything
It’s just easier to do this in your home country.
4. Bring Medication & Check It’s Allowed
Stock up on:
- Basic medication
- Prescriptions
- Anything you regularly use
Also check:
Is your medication allowed in Italy?
Some things are not.
5. Prepare Your Medical Records
If you have any conditions:
- Get your records printed
- Translate them into Italian if possible
- Find a doctor in Italy in advance
This will save you SO much stress later.
6. Contact Your Embassy
I didn’t do this… but I should have
It’s good for:
- Safety
- Emergencies
- Being registered in the country
7. Pack for the Right Climate
Italy is NOT the same everywhere.
- South = hot
- North = cold winters
Don’t assume it’s sunshine all year round.
8. Bring Your Hair & Beauty Essentials
Especially important if:
- You use specific products
- You have textured or afro hair
Bring at least a 1–2 month supply.
9. Scan & Save ALL Documents
This is a MUST.
Scan:
- Passport
- Degree
- Bank statements
- Birth certificate
Keep digital copies AND physical copies.
10. Bring Cash (Not Just Card)
Do NOT rely only on your card.
Some places still:
Don’t accept card
I’ve literally been caught out before
11. Plan Everything in Advance
Before you arrive:
- Book accommodation
- Check transport routes
- Look at locations on Google Maps
Familiarity makes everything easier.
12. Set Up Your “Comfort” Things
This might sound small… but it’s not.
- Download your favourite shows
- Get a VPN if needed
It really helps with homesickness.
13. Share Your Location & Travel Details
Give a family member:
- Your address
- Flight details
- Contact info
Just for safety and peace of mind.

14. Cancel Memberships & Contracts
Do this EARLY.
- Gym memberships
- Subscriptions
- Phone contracts
Some require notice (1–3 months)
15. Sort Your Finances & Insurance
Before moving:
- Pay off small debts
- Get travel/health insurance
- Check exchange rates
Also consider bringing savings (€3000–€5000 is ideal)
Moving to Italy is exciting… but it can also be overwhelming.
The more you prepare, the easier your life will be.
Take your time, plan properly, and don’t rush it.
